Bull Terriers are very solid, thick, muscular, well proportioned dogs. Bull Terriers have short, thick, dense coats of fur, that usually come in pure white, black, brindle, red, fawn and tri-colored.
We have two young children, a cocker spaniel, and a Westie, and have had our current bull terrier for about a year. It has made an excellent addition to our family. She gets along with both our children and other dogs. One of the best pieces of advice that I would give to someone considering a bull terrier would be to make sure you have an area for it to play in, such as a back yard (even a small one will do) and/or make sure you have the time and will commit to excercising your bull terrier, as well as integrating it into your family activities. She loves to be a part of what we do, and is very energetic and loving.
As far as bull terriers in general:
The bull terriers head is flat at the top, with a large, long nose, and closely set, small dark eyes. Their bodies are very full and rounded, and very muscular.
Bull terriers were once bread as fighting and guard dogs, but the breed is much calmer and gentler now. Bull Terrier puppies are loyal, polite, and obedient dogs who become very much attached to their masters, whom they have been known to unwaveringly defend.
Bull terrier puppies are extremely fun loving, playful, fearless, and corageous. They need consistantly firm leadership and make excellent family pets, although they are not for every family. They thrive on companionship and supervision/leadership, and do not do well in situations where they are left to themselves 8+ hours a day. The more playing and companionship with Bull Terriers, the better.
Bull terriers like to play and will quite often get into family play and rough housing. They enjoy both children and adults, but need plenty of mental and physical stimulation and exercise, or they may become destructive. As long as they are thouroughly trained and socialized in the family, they will make a wonderful lifetiime companion. If not given enough physical and mental stimulation and excercise they can be too energetic for very small children.
Standard bull terriers will grow to a height of about 2 feet, and will usually weigh between 40 and 80 pounds.
Bull terriers are generally a healthy breed. If they do deveop health issues, some of the things to watch for in bull terriers are zinc deficiencies, obsessive compulsive tendancies (such as chasing it's tail), dislocation of the knee caps, and weight gain, allergy problems. Some male Bull Terriers have high testosterone levels, which can lead to them being more terrirorial, which can in most cases be resolved by neutering.
Bull terriers are very easy to keep up with. As far as grooming goes, occasionally brushing them will do. They are average shedders, shedding about twice a year.
Bottom line: Bull Terriers make very loyal, excellent family pets as long as they get the attention and exercise they need and deserve. They are very loving and need firm training and leadership, and will be extremely loyal and protective.
The average life expectancy of a bull terrier is about 10 to 12 years.
